{"id":1358,"date":"2011-12-05T18:36:44","date_gmt":"2011-12-05T18:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldteamnow.org\/blog\/?p=1358"},"modified":"2011-12-06T04:26:42","modified_gmt":"2011-12-06T04:26:42","slug":"cop17-our-worlds-crazy-climate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldteamnow.org\/blog\/2011\/12\/05\/cop17-our-worlds-crazy-climate\/","title":{"rendered":"COP17 &amp; Our World&#8217;s  &#8220;Crazy Climate&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"[vimeo http:\/\/vimeo.com\/32366389]\n<p>As 99% of the world cries out with various forms of the Occupy Movement, one thing seems to be clear to almost all\u2014 the systems we have created for humanity to live within need to be reconsidered, and ultimately transformed.\u00a0 These are <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/32366389\">crazy times<\/a> and to look at our systems globally is to wonder, with all of the magnificent brilliance of humanity, how did we end up here?\u00a0 Why do our political, medical, legal, educational, financial systems seem ineffective in truly serving humanity at large?\u00a0 How can we continue to make decisions about one country or state, when this is one world and the boundaries are shrinking with the realization like parts of the body\u2014 what is done to one part (or country) affects the whole body or (world). \u00a0Why can&#8217;t we take this to heart and take action about climate change and agree to significant environmental policy for our world and our future? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TlvDZhLs8Mw&amp;feature=related\">If not at COP17<\/a>, maybe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncsd2012.org\/rio20\/\">Rio+20<\/a> will be the time\u2014 after all Brazil is shaped like a heart.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations conferences have been the global games for tackling environmental issues facing humanity and our planet.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TlvDZhLs8Mw&amp;feature=related\">COP17<\/a> is taking place in Durban, South Africa and how many in the world are even aware?\u00a0 Yes, <a href=\"http:\/\/unfccc.int\/resource\/docs\/2011\/cop17\/eng\/01.pdf\">the daily agenda<\/a> is dense and intense\u2014\u00a0making it easier for most of us to ignore as week two begins. This past week the US media had little coverage on COP17.\u00a0 Was it primarily because much of the world perceived the United States\u2019 leading monetary capitalism as the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/climate-connections.org\/2011\/11\/29\/a-view-of-the-un-climate-talks-in-durban-south-africa-of-elephants-and-blind-men-and-noahs-ark-and-elephants-again\/\">giant elephant in the room<\/a> that prevented the rest of the world from taking steps forward?<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/12\/04\/opinion\/sunday\/remember-kyoto-most-nations-dont.html\">New York Times did a thorough article on the Kyoto Protocol<\/a>,\u00a0which is the closest we have come so far, to significant global environmental policy\u2014\u00a0although\u00a0flawed it still may be <a href=\"http:\/\/politics.slashdot.org\/story\/11\/12\/02\/161230\/kyoto-protocol-renewal-efforts-struggling\">better than not having anything<\/a>. Here is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/12\/01\/climate-mood-idUSL5E7MT5A020111201\">good article on the EU \u2018s fight for climate policy.<\/a>\u00a0 Unfortunately, the US Congress attempts to pass energy or climate policy has stalled as the issue is gridlocked between Democrats and the Republicans.\u00a0 Perhaps an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/local\/2011\/12\/05\/at-climate-talks-an-african-approach-to-tackling-deadlock\">African approach<\/a> would be more successful? \u00a0S. Africa\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3wD8I6TQN9M\">actions with renewable energy and approach to understand the link to economics<\/a>\u00a0deserves attention.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\">COP17 update:<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1379\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worldteamnow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/dsc01501.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1379\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1379\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/worldteamnow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/dsc01501.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldteamnow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/dsc01501.jpg 3264w, https:\/\/worldteamnow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/dsc01501-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/worldteamnow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/dsc01501-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/worldteamnow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/dsc01501-800x600.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1379\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suzanne Maxx for World Team<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On Friday there was talk that China would indeed consider signing a deal at COP17\u2014 if so the United States might no longer have an excuse.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/worldteamnow.org\/blog\/2009\/12\/25\/cop15-copenhagen-denmark-outcome-fluctuates-like-extreme-climate-change\/\">Memories of COP15<\/a>\u00a0and bearing witness to the frustrating way the United States and China were communicating with the rest of the world still haunt many of us.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\">The Weekend<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.c17.org.za\/global-day-of-action\">C17<\/a>\u00a0 took an active role in organizing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sabc.co.za\/news\/a\/c1beae00494b94c4827dbe728dc31494\/Nkoana-Mashabane-promises-tangible-results-for-COP17-20111204\">march of about 5,000 people <\/a>\u00a0through the streets of Durban this past weekend. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tcktcktck.org\/2011\/12\/live-from-durbans-global-day-of-action-march\/\">Tck,tck,tck<\/a>,\u00a0a campaign World Team Now is\u00a0involved\u00a0with, helped rally the civil action that \u00a0is an important part of all the U.N. conferences.\u00a0 \u00a0This \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/unfccc.int\/meetings\/durban_nov_2011\/meeting\/6245.php\">UNFCC conference<\/a>\u00a0 was no different\u2014 as marches bring more than talk, paper, and policy and into lives showing masses of humanity together in action.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Concert<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As a GCCA partner, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldteamnow.org\/\">World Team Now<\/a> celebrates<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apeuk.org\/\"> Artist Project Earth (APE<\/a>), holding a benefit concert for victims of East Africa&#8217;s famine on\u00a0<strong>Sunday December 4<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong>, during COP17 in Durban.<\/p>\n<p>APE has a long history of raising funds to help those suffering from the effects of natural disasters. To date, three albums have been launched in collaboration with Cuban musicians and Western artists, including Amy Winehouse, Sting, Coldplay, U2, and Gorillaz. Global sales have topped the one and a half million mark allowing the organization to fund nearly 300 global projects which address natural disaster relief and climate change awareness.\u00a0World Team Now stands in support of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XcEl0H1Jek8&amp;feature=youtu.be\">this work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff0000;\">Hope, at the Last Minute<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As usual the last two days of the conference, the 8<sup>th<\/sup> and the 9<sup>th<\/sup>, when the heads of state are all present, we can hope \u00a0action will happen.\u00a0 As much as we would like to see progress here, unfortunately the end may be when the Kyoto Protocol expires\u2014 the last chance looks to be <a href=\"http:\/\/worldteamnow.org\/blog\/2011\/06\/04\/rio20-more-than-reunion\/\">Rio in June,<\/a> but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/africa\/ap-interview-top-un-official-confident-rich-nations-will-renew-kyoto-protocols-co2-pledges\/2011\/12\/03\/gIQAT2MfNO_story.html\">hope still remains for the Kyoto Protocol<\/a> at COP17. Remembering the legacy of President Lulu and seeing how amazing he was in Copenhagen at COP15, we ask Brazil to keep on the path of transformation at COP17 as in this <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.avaaz.org\/en\/brazil_save_durban\/?aFNUfbb\">AVAZ campaign<\/a>.
