Today is the last day to see the flying car and all that electrifies at the International New York Auto Show 2012. \u00a0Almost every maker of the automobile has an electric vehicle in the works, and some of these new vehicles are more than electrifying!<\/p>\n

The\u00a0CEO<\/a>\u00a0of Japan-based\u00a0Nissan<\/a>,\u00a0and he holds the same positions at Paris-based\u00a0Renault<\/a>, Carlos Ghosn, electrified the auto industry with a powerful opening key note that demonstrated \u00a0leadership<\/a>,\u00a0sharing\u00a0his global vision for the electric vehicles (EVs) (which demonstrates alignment with our World Team project). “Nissan’s all electric Leaf \u00a0is on top,” shared\u00a0Mark Perry, the Director for Product Planning and Advanced\u00a0Technological\u00a0Strategy, \u00a0“This year the Leaf will be\u00a0available\u00a0to many more people\u00a0particularly\u00a0due to higher production with \u00a0the\u00a0manufacturing\u00a0plant in Tennessee coming on line to support the high demand”.<\/p>\n

One of the many\u00a0exciting\u00a0electric and cross over vehicles besides the Altima and Pathfinder, is the new \u00a0all electric Infiniti LE which made it’s world debut at this show with Mr. Ghosn unveiling it. \u00a0This vehicle diverges from the Leaf in\u00a0two technical areas \u2014 aerodynamics and weight savings. \u00a0It also will come with a built in wireless charging system.<\/p>\n

The cross over electric vehicles, with “Range Extenders<\/a>,” like Fisker’s Karma, and the Chevy’s Volt \u00a0make allowance for long distance \u00a0if necessary without dealing with “range anxiety”. \u00a0But owners of the Volt are commonly appreciating the\u00a0luxury\u00a0of “fuel anxiety,” explained\u00a0\u00a0Rob Peterson, Manager of \u00a0Chevrolet Volt and Electric Vehicle Technologies\u00a0at\u00a0General Motors<\/a>. \u00a0<\/strong>They are so excited about free charging from renewable energy sources, and the price of electricity vs. gas that they now have anxiety about having to give about $5.oo per gallon to oil companies”. \u00a0He went on to explain that a group of owners are now\u00a0competing\u00a0 to see who can go the longest\u00a0period\u00a0of time\u00a0cumulatively\u00a0without having to re-fuel with fossil fuel at all. \"\"<\/a>\u00a0These vehicle owners have the freedom of a “plan B”, if they do need additional range, they have the choice. When given the choice people are choosing to change the driving habits, so the Volt is one of the new vehicles that is in a range, (both price and distance) for most people.<\/p>\n

Jack Hidary, who leads Hertz’s global EV iniatives is OEM brand agnostic. Hertz is \u00a0striving to have access to all the EVs for the public to rent, a great way for people to \u00a0transition off fossil fuel vehicles and test EVs out. \u00a0Hertz’s EVs range from the Tesla to the Leaf with crossovers like the Volt and the soon to be Karma along with a slew of German EVs emerging<\/a>. \u00a0New vehicles \u00a0are planned to be available in the USA soon, like BYD’s E6. \u00a0Hertz remains the leader in electric vehicle rentals, and the rental company is testing the wireless inductive charging system with a pilot program at corporate headquarters. \u00a0The future of EVs \u00a0is presently functioning in the City of Shenzhen, China\u00a0 where 100 fast chargers are already deployed and a charging infrastructure \u00a0that supports the use of electric vehicles is in place. \u00a0In\u00a0Shenzhen, \u00a0the new purchase of a BYD vehicle also comes with two level 2 chargers. Renting the\u00a0vehicles\u00a0is a viable option especially while\u00a0the USA ramps up the charging\u00a0infrastructure\u00a0and we extend the range of the batteries for the EVs, explore inductive changing, or do a battery swap model like Better Place’s<\/a> in Isreal and soon to be in\u00a0Australia. \u00a0Presently\u00a0\u00a0the batteries of the Tesla and Leaf is limited in range, which is fine for local driving, but those cross country trips may require a rental from Hertz and\u00a0you never know you might even find the EV version of the Dolorean.<\/p>\n

The Flying Car; Terrafugia Transition<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n

Hopefully Hertz will even stock the new car that flies. \u00a0Maybe the flying cars will have a cross over ( not just from vehicle to plane), but also have an electric\u00a0future.
